South Korean investors saw a boost in their portfolios on Monday as semiconductor stocks led a significant rally in the country’s stock market, despite lingering concerns over Middle East tensions and high oil prices. The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose by 113.49 points, marking a 1.65% increase to close at 7,007.72, reflecting a positive sentiment towards technology sectors, particularly those connected to artificial intelligence and semiconductors.

Samsung Electronics was a standout performer, with its shares climbing 4.98% to reach 274,000 won. SK hynix, another major player in the semiconductor industry, also saw gains, albeit more modest with a 0.59% rise, taking its stock price to 1.87 million won. The parent company of SK hynix, SK Square, enjoyed a 4.45% increase, contributing to the upbeat mood in the tech sector.

Despite the positive momentum in technology stocks, the broader market presented a mixed picture. Notably, Hyundai Motor experienced a decline, with its shares falling by 1.64%. Similarly, LG Energy Solution saw a 3.3% drop, highlighting the varied performance across different sectors of the Korean economy.

The currency market echoed the stock market’s positivity, as the Korean won appreciated against the US dollar. The won strengthened by 4.5 won, closing at 1,381 won per dollar, indicating investor confidence amid the global economic uncertainties.

Overall, the focus on semiconductors and related technologies helped offset broader market concerns, suggesting that investors remain optimistic about the potential of these sectors despite external geopolitical and economic pressures.
